New documentary brings generations of northern B.C. queer history to the screen

Stories of community, resilience and change across generations of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Northern B.C. will take centre stage this fall with the premiere of North of Queer.

Presented by the Northern BC Queer Connection Society and produced in collaboration with Prince George-based 6ix Sigma Productions, the documentary will premiere Nov. 14 at the Prince George Playhouse.

North of Queer explores the lived experiences of queer people in Northern B.C. across three generations, examining the joys, struggles and milestones that have shaped queer life in the region. Through intimate conversations, interviews, archival footage and an exploration of queer spaces both hidden and celebrated, the film asks three central questions: What has changed? What has stayed the same? And what does the future hold for queer identity in the North?

The premiere will be more than a film screening, bringing the community together for an evening celebrating Northern B.C.’s queer history, culture and community. Drag performances will be featured throughout the evening, followed by a post-screening panel discussion with the film’s three featured participants, Theresa Healy, Jean Baptiste and Iris, as well as director Daniel Stark and co-executive producer Laura Binette.

“So much of our queer history in Northern B.C. lives in the stories people carry with them. Some were never shared because people did not feel safe or there was simply no space for 2SLGBTQIA+ voices, while others were reduced to a headline that could never capture the fullness of their lives,” said Laura Binette, Executive Director of the Northern BC Queer Connection Society and co-executive producer of North of Queer. “This film gives us a chance to create that space now. It honours the people who fought for change while celebrating the full, vibrant lives 2SLGBTQIA+ people have always lived in this beautiful Northern landscape.”

The 27-minute documentary features Healy, Baptiste and Iris, whose stories offer perspectives from different generations of queer life in Northern B.C. Together, their experiences explore community-building, activism, health care, queer expression and the evolving meaning of belonging in the North.

The documentary grew out of work already underway through the Northern BC Queer Connection Society to archive local queer history, testimonials and media. The society partnered with 6ix Sigma Productions to bring those stories to the screen, with director Daniel Stark and the Prince George-based production team helping shape the collected history and lived experiences into North of Queer.

While the Nov. 14 premiere will mark the film’s first local public screening, the Northern BC Queer Connection Society hopes it will also mark the beginning of a longer life for North of Queer as a community and educational resource.

Following the premiere, the society plans to make opportunities available for schools, community organizations and other groups to host screenings and create further conversations about queer history, identity and belonging in Northern B.C.
