Kyle Sampson is setting his sights on the big chair at City Hall.
The two-term city councillor announced Monday he is running for mayor of Prince George.
Sampson was first elected in 2018 as the youngest councillor in Prince George’s history. He has now served two
terms, and says he has devoted his time on council to listening, bring forward practical solutions, strengthening
financial oversight, advancing healthcare advocacy, effectively lobbying government, and championing
public safety.
Throughout his time on council, Sampson has helped lead advocacy that secured major healthcare
investments, championed stronger financial accountability measures, advanced customer service
improvements at City Hall, and brought forward practical initiatives to improve community safety.
Sampson’s additional council work beyond City Hall includes currently serving as Chair of the Fraser-Fort
George Regional Hospital District, acting as a Director with the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.
He’s also a Trustee with the Municipal Finance Authority of British Columbia, a member of the BC RCMP
Local Government Contract Management Committee, and is in a leadership role regarding municipal
advocacy through the City’s Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.
Sampson says Prince George is entering a rare window of opportunity. Over the next decade or two, the
city will see major shifts in industry, commercial development, housing, healthcare, and population
growth – changes that could reshape its trajectory for generations. Seizing that opportunity, and
ensuring growth is thoughtful and protects what people love most about Prince George, he says, will
require a mayor who understands the full scope of the role: someone willing to bring people together,
make decisions, and stay focused on getting things done.
After eight years on council, Sampson says he has seen first hand where City Hall is working well, where
the barriers are, where it needs to improve, and that the job of Mayor extends well beyond chairing
meetings and making promises to setting a clear vision, building relationships, and keeping the
organization focused and moving in the right direction.
“I believe being a leader is about more than identifying problems and making promises,” said Sampson.
“The next mayor needs more than a vision – they need the experience to bring people together, the
courage to make decisions, and leadership to turn that vision into acIon.”
Sampson says Prince George doesn’t need to choose between experience and fresh leadership; it needs
both. Rather than campaigning on a single idea or adopting a particular model, Sampson says his
approach is rooted in practical leadership and locally developed solutions.
“As mayor, I believe my responsibility isn’t to follow someone else’s playbook; it’s to learn and listen to
community members’ ideas and solutions, include and adapt them into a shared vision, and build an
approach that reflects Prince George’s unique strengths, challenges, and opportunities,” said
Sampson.
As mayor, Sampson is committed to listening to community leaders, residents, and business owners
while providing practical, collaborative leadership. By setting clear priorities, encouraging meaningful
contributions from Council, making thoughtful financial decisions, and finding pragmatic solutions, he
will ensure City Hall remains relentlessly focused on delivering results and building an optimistic future
for Prince George.
“Prince George isn’t broken – it just needs strong, bold, clear leadership that understands the role of the
Mayor and the role the City plays in unlocking these opportunities,” said Sampson. “This is an incredible
community with incredible people, and I believe our best days are still ahead of us. I want to do my part
to make sure we seize this moment and build the kind of city people are proud to call home, and choose
to call home.”
Kyle Sampson’s campaign officially kicks off on Thursday, August 13 at 11:30 a.m. at Studio 2880 (2880
