The Self Portrait:
Reflections of an Artist

From Rembrandt to Picasso, throughout art history, self portraits have been a recurring subject matter. What makes them so special? Since our own image is very accessible to us, it makes sense that artists would reflect upon their own images.
More importantly, unlike other portraits, self portraiture by its very nature is autobiographical, it’s a snapshot in time that narrates stories about our identity, emotional state, memories, ideologies, and desires. Self portraiture provides a platform for artists to control every aspect of their narrative, including their perspective, materials, brushstrokes, and colour palettes.
A carefully considered self-portrait can be the most raw, probing, and insightful image an artist can create. This exhibition is an invite and an effort to get to know each artist on a deeper, personal level.
In partnership with The Central Interior Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), this exhibition brings together personal anecdotes through the mirror of self, offering a reflective journey of how one’s image is perceived.
Exhibition Opening
Please join everyone at Two Rivers Gallery for the opening reception of The Self Portrait: Reflections of an Artist on Thursday, August 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Galleria. The reception will begin with a short introduction by an executive member of The Central Interior Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Light refreshments will be available for visitors to enjoy.
