In September 2023 funding was provided from the federal and provincial governments through the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund for a new child care centre in the Hart.
Demolition of the former Austin Road Elementary school was completed in the summer of 2024 and the project went through a rigorous design and budget process from September 2023 to February 2026. The project was tendered and awarded in April 2026. Construction of the new child care centre is expected to begin in June 2026 with completion of the project anticipated in the summer of 2027.
The centre will provide 12 child care spaces under 36 months, 25 child care spaces 30 months to school age, and 25 school age child care spaces.
School District 57 Superintendent/CEO, Jameel Aziz said: “SD57 is pleased to see progress being made on the critical need for childcare in Prince George. This centre will provide much needed space in the Hart area. We look forward to the progress and completion of this project in 2027.”
