Carefree Society to wind-up of operations in Prince George

The Carefree Society yesterday announced that it will be winding up its operations and ceasing its services after many years of dedicated work supporting accessible transportation and inclusive community initiatives in Prince George and the surrounding region.

This decision follows thoughtful review of the society’s sustainability
and long-term direction.

As part of the wind-up process, the society is selling its building and other remaining
assets. The proceeds from these sales will be directed to a qualified donee, with the
intention of continuing Carefree’s legacy of advancing accessibility, inclusivity, and
transportation solutions for those who rely on them most. The society is committed to
ensuring that the impact of its work will carry forward through organizations aligned with its mission.

Carefree Society has been a key contributor to community mobility initiatives, including
originating HandyDART services in Prince George, and more recently piloting a universally
accessible tour service, which have significantly enhanced independence and access for
individuals facing transportation barriers. The society takes pride in the role it has played in
shaping these essential services and improving quality of life for many residents across the
region.

While the society’s formal operations are coming to a close, community needs remain.
Carefree acknowledges the ongoing gaps in accessible transportation and is encouraged
by efforts underway to address them. The organization expresses its support for community partners, leaders, and service providers working to build on this foundation and continue advancing equitable transportation solutions.

As part of its transition planning, the society is seeking to transfer or arrange a buyout of its
community shuttle lease. Interested organizations are encouraged to come forward as
soon as possible, to explore opportunities that will allow this asset to continue serving
community needs.

Carefree Society extends its sincere gratitude to its partners, funders, staff, volunteers,
and community members who have supported its work over the years. The organization
remains confident that, through collaboration and shared commitment, its legacy will
endure in the continued strengthening of accessible and inclusive transportation in Prince
George and beyond.

The society’s tour service will continue until the end of June 2026.

For more than 50 years, Carefree Society has served Prince George and the surrounding
region as a non-profit organization focused on accessible and inclusive transportation. The
society has helped advance community mobility by providing safe, reliable service for
seniors and individuals with mobility and accessibility needs, while continuing to explore
innovative approaches that support connection, independence, and participation in
community life.
