The Prince George Spruce Kings scored four times in the second period, and finished off a 7-2 victory over the Chilliwack Chiefs in Game 2 of the second round on Saturday night at Kopar Memorial Arena to take a 2-0 series lead.
For the second straight night, the Chiefs opened the scoring on the power play as Koby Francis put it past Ryder Green on a pass from Dustin Renas and Nico Grabas.
The Spruce Kings responded quickly as Michael Denney got the puck back to Robby Hoch who found his partner Dracen Campbell whose wrist shot went top shelf on Vladislav Bryzgalov.
Just 30 seconds later, off a faceoff win by Mason Loewen, a loose puck was found by Carter Hesselgrave found the left point and Evan Bellamy’s wrister was deflected by Loewen going to the net to give the Spruce Kings a 2-1 lead.
The tide seemed to turn in the Chiefs in the second as Sam Auld scored shorthanded on the Spruce Kings first power play of the night.
Prince George responded on the power play at 8:01 when Hesselgrave found space in the slot and Marcus Lougheed connected with him, and his wrist shot beat Bryzgalov to make it 3-2.
Then, on a 4 on 3 power play, Ryan Wachtel got the puck at the top of the circles and buried his second of the playoffs to make it 4-2.
The run continued just 57 seconds later as Lougheed found Cooper Faughnan in the slot after hard work from Lucas Busch on the forecheck, as Faughnan slid it five hole as he found himself all alone to make it 5-2.
With just six seconds, Michael Denney worked a turnover and found Wachtel who was just stopped by Bryzgalov. The puck came out the far side and Denney recovered then fed the seam to Wachtel who’s one-timer beat Bryzgalov up high on the blocker side to make it 6-2 heading to the second intermission.
The Spruce Kings got their seventh of the game as Loewen picked the pocket of the Chiefs defenseman and Denney picked up the loose puck and wrapped it around tucking it by David Di Girolamo, who had entered the game to start the third.
