PGSO Mainstage concert finale ends season dramatically

The Prince George Symphony Orchestra shows a familiar face in a new light at their season finale Mainstage Concert, Storm and Stress.

Lydia Hug steps out of her role as PGSO Concertmaster to dazzle as a soloist in a Brahms violin concerto. Hug performed as Acting Concertmaster and Acting Principal Violin 2 in the 21-22 season before becoming the Concertmaster in the 22-23 season, so PGSO regulars already know her poise and skill. Before moving to Canada from Germany in 2021, Hug played internationally with various ensembles, including tours in Europe, Asia, and North and South America.

The piece Hug plays, Violin Concerto in D Major, has dramatic roots. Johannes Brahms composed this, his only violin concerto, with and for his virtuoso violinist friend Joseph Joachim. This stormy collaboration between the hard-headed pragmatist Brahms and the passionate Joachim created one of Germany’s greatest violin concerti, though the friendship itself broke down later over a personal dispute. Also on the program is Franz Liszt’s Les préludes, a piece influenced by the Sturm and Drang (storm and stress) movement. Canadian composer Abigail Richardson-Schulte’s dynamic piece Eris takes the name of a goddess of strife.

Storm and Stress promises to be a stunning afternoon of passionate music! Tickets are available online at tickets.pgso.com, at the PGSO Box Office at Studio 2880, or at the door.
