The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club successfully hosted the International Biathlon Union (IBU) Regional Event and Biathlon Canada Western Canadian Championships, presented by Canadian Tire Prince George, March 6–8, 2026, delivering three days of exciting racing, outstanding competition, and international exposure for Prince George.

More than 150 athletes from across Western Canada, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and the United States competed across the full biathlon development pathway from U13 and U15 youth categories to Youth, Junior, Senior and Masters athletes. The event also served as the Odlum Brown B.C. Provincial Biathlon Championships, crowning provincial champions in multiple categories.

Athletes and spectators experienced world-class racing conditions throughout the weekend, highlighted by brilliant sunshine and excellent snow conditions on Sunday’s final day of competition, creating a spectacular setting for the championship races.

The event also reached audiences far beyond Prince George. All competitions were broadcast live on the Biathlon Canada YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@biathloncanada4263/streams) attracting thousands of viewers from across Canada and internationally and showcasing both the athletes and the Caledonia Nordic venue to a global audience.

“This event demonstrated once again that Prince George is one of the premier Nordic sport destinations in North America,” said event organizers. “The level of competition was outstanding, the venue delivered exceptional racing conditions, and the enthusiasm from athletes, volunteers, and spectators created an unforgettable atmosphere.”

Community Celebration

A highlight of the weekend was the Saturday evening awards banquet held at Exploration Place, where athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters gathered to celebrate performances and the spirit of biathlon. The evening provided an opportunity for competitors from across North America to connect and recognize the accomplishments of athletes across all categories.

Throughout the weekend, families and spectators enjoyed a vibrant festival atmosphere at the venue, including the ever-popular inflatable Mr. PG, which quickly became a favourite photo opportunity for visiting teams.
Building Pathways for Student-Athletes

In partnership with the event, the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) once again offered a $2,000 tuition credit to participating athletes, providing a unique opportunity for competitors to pursue post-secondary education while continuing their athletic careers.

The credit, valued at $1,000 per semester for an athlete’s first two consecutive semesters at UNBC, highlights the strong partnership between the university and the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and supports the continued growth of the UNBC Timberwolves Nordic ski team. The initiative represents a powerful pathway for developing athletes to combine high-performance sport with academic opportunity.

The presence of the tuition credit at the event also allowed athletes and families to learn more about the academic and athletic opportunities available in Prince George.

Volunteers and Community Support

The success of the event was made possible by the dedication of over a hundred volunteers, officials, and community partners who supported everything from course preparation, range scoring and timing to athlete services and livestream production.

The event was presented by Canadian Tire Prince George, with support from the Government of British Columbia, the City of Prince George, Tourism Prince George, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, and Northern Development Initiative Trust.

Events like this continue to reinforce Prince George’s reputation as a leading host for major winter sport competitions.
