A massive fire in Fraser Lake has destroyed several buildings downtown. The following statement has been issued by the Village of Fraser Lake:
The fire at the Fraser Lake Shopping Centre remains active. We are asking all residents to remain indoors and to stay clear of the affected area for safety reasons.
If travel is necessary today, please avoid all roads surrounding the shopping centre, including Endako Avenue, Chowsunket Street, and Nulki Drive.
Additionally, due to the significant water demand required to manage this incident, a temporary water restriction is now in effect. We ask that you limit water use to essential needs only to support firefighting efforts.
Fraser Lake Mayor Sarrah Storey issued the following statement on her Facebook page:
Like you, I woke up to the incredibly sad news of a fire this morning in the Village of Fraser Lake. My heart goes out to those that are impacted. At this time, there is still more work to be done before a full statement can be made. The fire department is still ensuring that the fire is completely out, and I want to express my gratitude for their tireless efforts.
Obviously, for safety reasons, please stay out of the mall parking lot, and let’s prioritize caution and care for one another. In the next couple of hours and days, more information will come, and we will keep you updated with any new information, ensuring transparency and open communication. On behalf of Council, we would like to thank the Fraser Lake Volunteer Fire Department members for all their hard work on this very difficult night. Fire Chief Pacheco and his team are truly appreciated.Thank you to the rest of the first responders and RCMP as well.
Update: we are being asked to please reduce water consumption for the day.
