Prince George city council received an update on the expression of interest process and available grant funding to support the hosting of FIFA World Cup watch parties. Council approved administration applying for a provincial grant of up to $50,000 to host free community event(s) in partnership with local organizations during the FIFA World Cup, taking place between June 11 and July 19, 2026. The grant may cover up to 85 per cent of eligible expenses.
Council also approved up to $8,900 from the Major Events Reserve Fund to cover remaining event costs, should the grant application be successful. The proposed events would be free to the public and focus on celebrating soccer, sport, art, community, and multiculturalism.
Several organizations, including Tourism PG and the Prince George Youth Soccer Association, have expressed interest in supporting and participating in the planning and delivery of the events.
