WorkSafeBC inspected this firm’s worksite and observed two traffic control persons (TCPs) directing traffic from an unsafe position exposed to traffic. The firm failed to ensure TCPs were not positioned in an intersection open to traffic flow or the travelled portion of a roadway. This was a repeated and high-risk violation.
Background on roadside workers:
- Working in and around traffic is extremely dangerous.
- Between 2015 and 2024 in B.C., nine roadside workers were killed after being struck by a vehicle. Another 267 were injured and missed work.
- Employers and supervisors are responsible for the safety of employees who are exposed to the hazards of working along roadways and near traffic.
