Barkerville staff are pleased to present its upcoming Main Season special events that will be hosted this month at BC’s largest living history museum.
The Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration will be happening on Saturday August 16, a day dedicated to honouring the rich heritage of the region’s Indigenous communities. The Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival will take place the following week on Saturday August 23rd to celebrate unity, gratitude, and the beauty of the Harvest Moon. Everyone is invited to partake in these culturally significant celebrations that embrace the spirit of community and inclusivity.
Since its establishment as a recurring Barkerville event in 2014, the Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration has showcased the rich and diverse Indigenous cultures from throughout the region. The day will feature an array of engaging activities, including an artists’ market, games, dancers, stories, and complimentary bannock at the Welcome Centre.
The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival has been a long-standing tradition in Barkerville for over two decades. The day’s festivities will include captivating games for all ages, a lantern making workshop, and enchanting performances at the Theatre Royal. As the sun sets, the festival will culminate in a lantern parade that will illuminate the night.
Both of August’s cultural events are supported by the Province of British Columbia through the BC Fairs, Festivals and Events grant. The Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration is also supported by the New Pathways to Gold Society and Northern Routes Cultural Experiences, with the Northern Development Initiative Trust providing additional support for the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.
Barkerville’s Main Season will continue through to September 7th with regular programming, shops, and restaurants. Campgrounds and accommodations will remain open for reservations until October 1st. The Main Season, including the live performances at the Theatre Royal, are brought to you with support from Osisko Development.
Barkerville’s Olde-Fashioned Christmas will return on the weekend of December 13th & 14th, offering visitors a festive experience that includes carolers, fresh baking, sleigh rides, and a visit from Father Christmas himself.
