Become a companion volunteer

A compassionate new program is launching in Prince George to create a more inclusive and supportive community for individuals living with early-stage dementia and their care partners. The Connecting Minds Through Compassionate Hearts Program is a joint initiative, generously funded by Health Canada and UBC, and delivered in partnership between the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society (PGHPCS) and the Prince George Council of Seniors

This innovative initiative seeks to restore a sense of belonging, dignity, and purpose for individuals diagnosed with early dementia. The program will offer two key supports:

  • The Council of Seniors will provide dedicated services to support caregivers, offering them guidance, connection, and resources to help them navigate the challenges of dementia care.
  • PGHPCS will launch a Companionship Volunteer Program, where community volunteers will be matched with individuals living with early dementia based on shared interests, hobbies, or life experiences. Whether it’s gardening, music, woodworking, art, walking, or storytelling—this program recognizes the value in human connection and the power of shared passions.

“We believe that dementia does not erase a person’s identity or spirit,” says Donna Flood, Executive Director of PGHPCS. “This program is about restoring a sense of belonging and purpose—for both those living with dementia and for the volunteers who companion them.”

PGHPCS is currently seeking volunteers with a variety of hobbies, skills, or interests who are willing to commit their time, heart, and talents. Volunteers will undergo training through PGHPCS and will be supported throughout their journey as companions. The time commitment is meaningful, yet flexible, and the rewards—for both companions—are immeasurable.

By sharing your passion, you can help someone with dementia reclaim moments of joy, self-worth, and connection.

This program is a reflection of the values Prince George has long held dear—community, compassion, and caring for one another.
