New Galleria exhibition explores the importance of keeping good relations with all around us.
Wahkotowin: Good Relation
Erin Stagg
June 20th to August 3rd, 2025.
What does it mean to be in good relation with those around you? What relationships count and which do not?
This exhibit reminds us that humans are not the center of the world. Wahkohtowin is a complex word that acknowledges that we have a responsibility to be in good relation with those around us. It comes from the Cree/Northern Michif understanding that we are all related – not just the humans, but also the plants, animals, lands and waters. We have a responsibility to all life to be in good relation and this is a lesson that we need at this point in time.
There are stories of human relationships and of delicate relationships between birds and the plants they rely on. The complex relationships of season, waters, animals and plants are literally the foundation of life on this planet. Meanwhile, beading circles can be the foundation of a community and culture. This exhibit celebrates the relationships that exist beyond the nuclear family.
