All Hands on Deck initiative launched by library to revitalize outdoor deck

The Prince George Public Library has launched the All Hands on Deck initiative. This is a transformative project aimed at revitalizing the outdoor deck at the Bob Harkins Branch of the library into a vibrant community space.

This initiative not only addresses the necessary upgrades required for the library’s outdoor deck, but it also capitalizes on the opportunity to engage the community in transforming this space into a more meaningful and versatile area.

Paul Burry, Director of the library, emphasized the importance of community input: “The All Hands on Deck initiative underscores our commitment to community-driven development. This project is not merely about enhancing the deck’s appearance; it is about addressing current safety and structural concerns and creating a functional hub that meets the needs and desires of our community. We encourage everyone to participate, either in person at our open house or through our online survey. Your feedback is valuable and appreciated.”

This is a multi-year project, supported by the City of Prince George and fundraising efforts by the PGPL Board.

“This project reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing public spaces and strengthening community connections in our civic core,” said Mayor Simon Yu. ”We are not only ensuring the safety and integrity of the space, but we are also embracing the opportunity to reimagine it as a vibrant, inclusive area that brings people together.”

The All Hands on Deck initiative provides two key ways for the community to engage and share their insights, ensuring comprehensive participation in shaping the future of the library’s outdoor deck space:

  • Open House: The library will host an Open House event, providing an opportunity for community members to engage directly with the project team, share ideas, and experience the potential of the space firsthand.

o Date & Time: April 26, 2025, from 10 am – 2 pm

o Location: Prince George Public Library

  • Online Survey: For those unable to attend the Open House, the library offers an online survey accessible from now to June 13. This platform allows community members to contribute ideas at their convenience.

o Link to survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BKTXWS9

To learn more, the public is encouraged to visit the library’s website at https://www.pgpl.ca/all-hands-on-deck for detailed information about the Open House and to access the online survey. The feedback collected during this engagement period will significantly influence the final design and functionality of the deck.
