Third annual event to share hugs and honour loved ones in Prince George

Volunteers from past hug event.

For the third year in a row, Aaron Vanderpool and his family are sharing 20-second hugs in honour of their child, Taraji, who passed away in 2022.

Taraji’s family is hosting the event during Downtown Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 15. The campaign honours Taraji’s final gift to their dad the night before they died:

“I dedicate this event to my only child, Taraji,” said Aaron. “The last night I saw them before they died, they gifted me with a big, long, perfect hug. I love them and will miss them for all my days. They were my world, and this world will never be the same without them.

“I want to share my gift with you. Please join me on Feb. 15 and share a 20-second hug.”

The event also includes a memorial board where anyone can share memories or photos of their loved ones who have passed away.

“Why a 20-second hug?” said Aaron. “Research shows that the length of our hugs matter more than the number of hugs we receive. Twenty-second hugs can lift your mood, reduce your stress, and boost your happy hormones (oxytocin).”

Those who want to participate can stop by Foundry Prince George (1148 Seventh Ave; just off Veteran’s Square) between 1-3 p.m. on Feb. 15 for a 20-second hug from a caring volunteer. People are also encouraged to participate wherever they are located by sharing 20-second hugs with those around them.
