Filatova nets 17 in a Saturday setback to UFV

Saturday night at Brownridge Court, the UNBC Timberwolves Women (4-12) fell 77-51 to the Fraser Valley Cascades (13-5). The duo of Bernie Leda (22) and Maddy Gobeil (20) combined for 42 of UFV’s 77 points while Julia Tuchscherer led the way on the glass with eight boards. For the hosts it was Viktoriia Filatova who potted a team-high 17 while Amrit Manak chimed in with 11. On the glass Sveta Boykova supplied a game-high nine rebounds.

1st Quarter –

  • UFV ended the first quarter ahead by a slim 16-15 margin.
  • A balanced early attack for UNBC as Kuklisin, Filatova, Fuller, Mesquita and all found the score sheet, staking UNBC to a 12-9 lead.
  • Maddy Gobeil began her night with five points in the first for UFV, while Bernie Leda added four of her own. After 13 rebounds a night ago, Julia Tuchscherer nabbed three boards in the first quarter for the visitors.
  • With UFV ahead 16-12, Amrit Manak hit a triple from the side, pushing UNBC back within one.

2nd Quarter –

  • UFV outscored UNBC 25-9 in the second quarter.
  • Bernie Leda knocked down a pair of threes on her way to a 10-point quarter, while Maddy Gobeil added seven more to lead all scorers at half with 14.
  • Brynn Dergousoff supplied three points for UNBC while Yana Shupak, Halle Tiessen and Amrit Manak scored. Dergousoff also managed to pull down five rebounds in the quarter and shared the team lead rebounding at the half with Sveta Boykova.
  • The score at half showed 41-24 for UFV.

3rd Quarter –

  • UFV extended their lead by eight more after a 19-11 edge in the third.
  • The tandem of Gobeil (6) and Tuchscherer (6) combined for 12 points for the visitors.
  • Filatova did the heavy lifting in the third for UNBC as she potted six points, allowing her to reach double digits. The TWolves also got points in the third from Avin Jahangiri, Kuklisin and Tiessen.

4th Quarter –

  • The final quarter saw UFV edge UNBC by a 17-16 margin.
  • Bernie Leda led the charge for UFV with five more, which helped her arrive at her game-high 22.
  • The tandem of Filatova (7) and Manak (6) did a majority of the damage in the final Q for the hosts. Four of Manak’s points came from the free-throw line, while Filatova connected from deep, from two, and also twice from the charity stripe.

Up next for the TWolves, a trip South to Langley for a Friday-Saturday showdown with Trinity Western next weekend.
