Charges now laid in connection with January 19 shooting in Dawson Creek

BC Prosecution Service has approved charges in a weekend shooting that claimed one life in Dawson Creek on January 19.

Nolan Douglas Schmidt, 23, has been charged with second degree murder in connection with a shooting in the city. One other person remains in hospital with injuries.

Shortly after 11 p.m. January 19, Dawson Creek RCMP received a report of shots fired on 102nd Avenue in the city.

Upon police arrival one adult man was located deceased. While engaged with this investigation a second report of shots fired was received at a nearby hotel. An individual was found at that location with non-life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital.

This was not a random attack and those involved are known to each other, say police. Investigators are also looking at other ongoing investigations within the Dawson Creek area and progress continues to be made.

“The surge of resources that supported the investigation contributed to an arrest and subsequent charge approval. Additional charges may be possible if supported by further evidence as the investigation moves forward,” said Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of E Division Major Crime.

Schmidt remains in custody pending the results of a court hearing today.

Anyone who has any information that has yet to speak with police is asked to call the Dawson Creek RCMP at (250) 784-3700.
