Saturday night in Kamloops, the UNBC Timberwolves (4-10) fell 73-61 at the hands of the TRU WolfPack (1-15). TRU’s two starting graduates Priyanca Sundher (26) and Danijela Kovacevic (22) led the way with a combined 48 points. Sundher was especially dangerous from beyond the arc as she ripped off six triples on nine attempts. At the other end for UNBC, Viktoriia Filatova continued her stellar second season by posting yet another new career-high 26 points of her own. Filatova clicked on 10-of-19 from the field and hit four threes. Before fouling out in the fourth, Sveta Boykova added 12 points and nine boards for the visitors.

1st Quarter –

  • A 21-11 advantage for TRU after one,
  • Filatova nabbed the first five points of the game for UNBC, staking them to a 5-0 run. She’d finish with a team-best seven first quarter points.
  • Sundher drilled a triple on the next possession for TRU to put them on the board. She’d soon follow with another one, giving TRU a 10-7 lead.
  • Kovacevic (8) and Sundher (6) combined for 14 of TRU’s eventual 21 first quarter points.

2nd Quarter –

  • TRU outscored UNBC by a slim 15-14 margin in the second quarter.
  • Yana Shupak and Sophia Fuller made early buckets in the second which helped UNBC inch back within five (21-15).
  • Six of the next 11 points for UNBC came from Boykova who hit two layups and a jumper. Boykova led UNBC with eight points at the half.
  • After struggling offensively in the early moments of the quarter, the WolfPack got some life thanks to threes from Jocelyn Orr and Sundher, and seven more points from Kovacevic who led all scorers with 15 at the half-way mark.
  • On the glass, Morgan Eichenberger led TRU with five, while Boykova grabbed four in the first-half for UNBC.

3rd Quarter –

  • The WolfPack extended their lead by five after a 20-15 edge over UNBC in the third quarter.
  • Filatova claimed the first eight points of the third for the TWolves, including her second triple of the day.
  • A bucket apiece from from Boykova, Halle Tiessen and a single free-throw from Brynn Dergousoff rounded out the scoring in the third for UNBC.
  • Through three, Boykova led all players with seven boards.
  • Sundher stayed hot for TRU, piling on 10 points in the quarter. She got help from Kylee Koppes (4) and Kate De La Mare (3).

4th Quarter –

  • Filatova’s third three of the night opened the scoring of the fourth. She’d then tack on another three and a layup off a steal, pushing UNBC to within 10.
  • Threes then followed from Sarah Kuklisin and Amrit Manak, and all of a sudden a lead that was once 18 for TRU was now four.
  • Unfortunately for the TWolves, Boykova fouled out of the game with just under five minutes remaining in the fourth. Kovacevic hit the ensuing free-throws, pushing TRU’s lead to seven.
  • Sundher’s sixth triple of the night would end up being the dagger, as TRU’s lead was pushed back to nine. Sundher and Kovacevic each finished with seven fourth quarter points en route to TRU’s first victory of the season.

Up next for Sergey Shchepotkin’s club – A home double-header weekend against the UFV Cascades beginning Friday night at 6:00 pm at Brownridge Court.
