UNBC Northern Studies Program to Host Northern Days January 20–24

The University of Northern British Columbia’s Northern Studies Program is hosting Northern Days from January 20 to 24, 2025, a series of events celebrating UNBC’s leadership in northern and mountain research. 

This year’s Northern Days features Dr. Graham McDowell, Director of Science and Knowledge, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative and leader of the Canadian Mountain Assessment (CMA), who will present at the NRESi Colloquium on January 24, 2025, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m and Dr. Gail Fondahl, Professor Emerita UNBC who will present at the Global Friday Speakers Series on January 24, 2025 from 12:00-1:30pm.

Dr. McDowell’s presentation will speak to this groundbreaking work of knowledge co-creation that showcases the diversity and significance of mountain areas in Canada, clarifies challenges and opportunities facing mountain systems inspires future mountain-focused research, policy, and action.

Dr. Fondahl’s talk is titled “A Fractured North: Musings on Coping with the Closure of the Russian North to Scholars”. UNBC Professors Dr. Joseph Shea, contributing author of the CMA, Dr. Tristan Pearce, and Dr. Gary Wilson will also share their expertise during the event. Their ongoing work focuses on emerging issues in the Circumpolar Arctic and mountain regions.
