PG Ski Club gears up for annual fundraiser at local brewery

The Prince George Ski Club (PGSC) is gearing up for its second annual Pub Night Fundraiser, happening Saturday, January 11 at Trench Brewing.

In addition to live music by the Peace River based folk funk group Folky Strum Strum, tickets include a full dinner featuring smoked prime rib, mashed potatoes, and plenty of sides. Whether you are a regular on the slopes or not at all, everyone aged 19 and over is welcome at this night of great food and good music in support of PGSC programming.

The PGSC is a non-profit amateur sports organization which has been providing highquality alpine ski training to Prince George youth athletes for decades. According to PGSC Vice-President Kristi Francis, fundraising plays a crucial role in the club being able to offer affordable ski racing development programs for Northern BC athletes which range in age
from six to eighteen.

“Through a variety of fundraising initiatives and the work of a great number of volunteers, the PGSC is able to maintain our program registration costs as some of the lowest in the province,” said Francis. “These fundraising efforts make a big difference in making the sport of ski racing more accessible to Prince George families.”

Also featuring a silent auction and 50/50 raffle, all proceeds from the upcoming Pub Night Fundraiser will directly support PGSC programming, helping cover the costs of training, equipment, travel, and making sure athletes have the resources they need to have a great season.

With respect to this year’s season, Francis goes on to say that “PGSC has been weathering some challenging years since the pandemic, and this season is no different. Purden Ski Resort, our primary ski hill, remains closed at this time and we are unsure when it will open.”

Last season, weather challenges impacted training at Purden, but PGSC was able to forge ahead with alternative plans. However, the uncertainty in Purden’s opening this year has again forced the club to explore alternative training venues. Francis indicates that the club is very grateful to the Hart Ski Hill for making accommodations and that they have also
been turning to other northern resorts, including Troll Ski Resort, Powder King, and Murray Ridge.

“While their support has been invaluable, it’s come at an additional cost for both our club and the families that participate in our programs,” said Francis, noting the even larger importance of fundraising initiatives this season.

The PGSC Pub Night fundraiser takes place on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Trench Brewing, 399 Second Avenue, with doors opening at 6pm. Tickets are limited and can be purchased from any member of the PGSC executive or by emailing
pgscfundraiser@gmail.com. Tickets are $65/person and include live music and a full dinner (smoked prime rib, mashed potatoes, salad and vegetables) prepared by Trench Brewing.
