In the wake of the provincial government announcing nine wind power projects across the province, Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Kiel Giddens says the government should also step in to help a renewable energy project in Prince George.
The rookie Conservative MLA is calling on the province to change the Low Carbon Fuels Act which, he says, puts B.C. refineries at a disadvantage. He says, as currently written, the legislation has inadvertently subsidized American renewable diesel production with credits from British Columbia at a time when the U.S. is already subsidizing its own domestic renewable diesel production.
Giddens has prepared a private member’s bill that he says will fix the issue.
“The current act has created an unfair and uncompetitive renewable diesel credit market in B.C. leading to dumping of American renewable diesel into our province,” Giddens said in a news release. “We are calling on the NDP to get back to the Legislature to pass my private member’s bill to close this loophole before this unfair advantage leads to job losses in my community.”
Giddens is proposed an amendment to the Act, seeking to level the playing field for B.C. renewable diesel and to ensure that refineries, like Tidewater Renewables in Prince George, remain viable. The legislative amendment is designed to ensure that B.C. refineries remain competitive by eliminating the double-dipping in subsidies from renewable fuels from outside of B.C.

When we have a national postal strike across this Country with people up against the wall from the continuing pressure from Multi Nationals to increase their profits. This is not the time for Kiel Giddens, or anyone else to be sucking up to Multi Nationals. I think it is time that the Conservative MLA’s, ie: Kiel Giddens, Rosalyn Bird, and Sheldon Clare held a town hall meeting in Prince George and explain how they are going to resolve this strike, and deal with other issues in the forest industry, chemical industry, small business. We have industry and business in all area’s of North Central BC and it’s time for our local MLA’s to get to work. We did our part by electing them, and we now expect results.
One suggestion that I have would be for them to phone the Federal MP’s to work with the NDP and Liberals to resolve this issue. It seems incredible to me that a Liberal Government, with support from the NDP to stay in power, cannot get the postal workers back to work, so we can all enjoy Christmas. They can go back to polliticking after the festive season.
This is a thinly disguised ploy by Government to try and get rid of the Postal Service. When and if the Postal Service will be discontinued should (and if I have anything to do with it will) be decided by a National Referendum after we have a clear public debate. We will not accept anymore back door deals in this Country. Canada is going down the tube and the sole responsibility lies with our elected Governments ie; Federal, Provincial, and Municipal/Regional.
Lets not forget that we reduced the Conservative majority Government of Brian Mulrooney from a huge majority a few years ago to 2 seats. This happened because they lost the grass root Conservative support, and they are on the verge of losing it again. Its time for the high paid help, to pull their heads out of the sand, and get to work for the people of Canada, and not their personal ambitions.
Merry xmas
It is good to see that you intend to be an active Member.
Don. Your first hint or whether or not I have been an active member was my reference to getting Mulroney and his cohorts kicked out of Government. So lets say active for approx 40 years.
