On December 7, 2024, The Exploration Place will open its newest exhibit, Inga Andersen: The Blackout Girl Remembered, in the George Phillips Exhibit Gallery. This in-house production celebrates the life and legacy of Inga Andersen, a forgotten star with deep roots in Prince George, who rose to international fame as a dancer, choreographer, actress, and wartime performer.
Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Prince George, Inga Andersen’s story is one of extraordinary talent and relentless determination. By age 16, she had opened the Inga Andersen School of Dance in Prince George before setting her sights on Hollywood. Her remarkable career spanned continents, with performances in London, Paris, New York, and beyond. As a member of the world-renowned Albertina Rasch Dancers, she captivated audiences and shared stages with royalty and cultural icons of her time.
During World War II, Andersen became known as the Blackout Girl for her fearless performances on the front lines. Singing without microphones in bombed-out buildings, she inspired soldiers with her humour, courage, and wit. Her work earned her a spot on Hitler’s execution list for her satirical, anti-Nazi songs.
“Inga Andersen was not only a talented singer, dancer, and performer, but she was also fearlessly outspoken,” says Assistant Curator Chad Hellenius. “She had charm, wit, and an undeniable presence that commanded attention, and she deserves to be remembered as the national treasure that she was.”
This immersive exhibit will feature artifacts from Inga’s life, including photographs, costumes, and recordings—many never before displayed. Visitors will explore her early life in Prince George, her rise to stardom, her wartime contributions, and her return home. Highlights include newly discovered vocal recordings and archival footage of her performances.
How could such a woman—once the toast of London, New York, and Paris—be forgotten? This exhibit seeks to uncover the answer and celebrate her legacy in the community she once called home. Inga Andersen: The Blackout Girl Remembered opens December 7, 2024.
