Manak, Filatova, Boykova all hit double digits in a Friday loss to Regina

Friday afternoon in Regina, the UNBC Timberwolves dropped a 91-50 score to the Regina Cougars. Maddy Seida and Jade Belmore each recorded 17 points for the hosts while Amrit Manak led all UNBC scorers with 12.

A tough start for the Green and Gold as Regina held a 28-8 lead after one. Both Fust sisters and Belmore each hit field goals early, helping Regina to a 7-0 run to start. A layup by Boykova got UNBC on the board, but Izzi Fust and Cara Misskey responded with threes making it a 15-2 score. Regina began the game hitting eight of their first 11 field goals. Another bucket from Boykova, a late layup from Claire Huang, and a pair of Bella Mesquita free throws rounded out the first-quarter scoring for UNBC. For the Cougars, Kyu Fust went three-for-three in the first quarter which resulted in six points and Belmore added six of her own on two-of-three shooting.

A better start for the TWolves in the second as Huang and Filatova both hit a pair of free throws and a Boykova layup helped UNBC start on a 6-0 run. After grabbing nine rebounds a day ago, Halle Tiessen snagged her first of the day off the offensive glass and added a layup for the second UNBC field goal of the quarter. Amrit Manak, Brynn Dergousoff and Viktoriia Filatova also found the scoresheet over the course of the quarter for UNBC, on their way to 15 points. Rachel Vanderhooft shot well for Regina in the second, hitting three jumpers to supply six of Regina’s 25 second quarter points. Brenna Metz followed with the third three of the day for Regina in the late moments, helping push their lead to 53-23.

At half, Regina’s Belmore led all scorers with 12 points on five-of-eight shooting. The reigning conference Player of the Year also had a game-high six rebounds. Boykova led UNBC with six points and four rebounds in response while Huang, Filatova and Manak each had four points.

A three from UNBC’s Manak and Kyu Fust layup for Regina started the third-quarter’s scoring. Mesquita and Filatova then followed with jumpers as UNBC began the quarter on a 7-4 run. Near the halfway point of the third, a triple from Belmore was bookended by makes from both Boykova and Filatova as UNBC did not let their deficit impact their hustle or purpose. Regina answered with a three from Misskey and a layup from Taylor Gottselig. Back came the Green and Gold with Manak’s second triple of the quarter, giving UNBC three on the day, while also moving her to double-digits in scoring for the first time in 2024-25. She’d add another jumper late in the quarter to give UNBC an 18-17 edge in third quarter scoring. Regina though held a 70-41 lead through 30 minutes.

The home side got hot from deep in the fourth as Maddy Seida (2), Josie Valley and Misskey all hit from deep. Halfway through the fourth, Regina had connected on 10 of their 23 attempts from three. The early scoring in the fourth for UNBC came off a layup from Tiessen, free-throws from Filatova and a three from Dergousoff. A Boykova layup and a free-throw from Filatova cemented the scoring for UNBC who fell Friday by a final score of 90-51.

The Cougars finished the day with a field goal percentage of 53 (35/66) as Seida (17), Belmore (17) and Misskey (16) combined for 50 points. Belmore completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. Manak (12), Filatova (11) and Boykova (10) all reached double-digits for UNBC while Boykova (7) and Dergousoff (6) combined for 13 boards.

UNBC will now return to the friendly confines of Brownridge Court for a Friday-Saturday home double-header weekend against UBCO beginning Friday, November 22 at 6:00 pm.
