Montroy ends thriller in overtime

The Spruce Kings saw three leads evaporate but got the overtime winner from Ethan Montroy in a 6-5 victory Friday night at Kopar Memorial Arena.

Prince George had a start to remember as Brock Cummings scored against his former team just 3:12 into the game on a rebound from a point shot from Trent LeDrew.

Will Moore widened the gap to 2-0 at 8:08 as he snapped a shot past Alexei Noskov on a two on one, after Jayden Connors knocked a pass down and pushed it forward.

On the first power play of the night, Skogen Schrott hammered one past Noskov on a faceoff win from Cummings, sending the Spruce Kings faithful into a frenzy.

It was short lived though as the Spruce Kings took four straight penalties, and the Capitals scored three times in 4:29 to tie the game. Camden Bajzer, Luca Primerano, and Carter Streek all scored past Carter Wishart from different locations, shocking the Prince George crowd.

After the crazy first period, the second period had a wild stretch just 1:07 long which saw four goals cross the line.

Brogan McNeil gave the Spruce Kings a 4-3 lead at 12:23 as he buried one past Noskov off a strong forecheck from Mason Loewen and Ryan Wachtel.

19 seconds later, it was Streek’s second from Cowichan to tie the game as he beat Wishart off a faceoff.

Just 17 seconds after that, McNeil snapped one off the crossbar, and while the goal light went on, it never crossed the line, and he circled back towards the goal and Ryan Wachtel found him and he snapped it into a yawning cage before Noskov could get back in net.

Ben Portner tied the game at five apiece at 13:40, as his shot beat Wishart short side, and brought Ryder Green into the net for the Spruce Kings.

Prince George controlled the third period, out-shooting Cowichan Valley 13-3, but couldn’t find a goal, as the game needed the extra frame.

The Capitals held the puck for a good majority of overtime, but the Spruce Kings went in three wide with under three to go, and Cummings found Montroy who’s shot hit a defenders stick but floated into the goal before anyone could clear, sending 1,087 home happy with the result.
