This year, Engage Sport North (ESN) is celebrating 30 years of providing high-performance sport education and training–which has helped local Olympians kick start their careers.
For many aspiring athletes, ESN is the starting point for sport opportunities and physical-literacy skill development for children and adults. They work with people of all ages and abilities, from those new to sport to experienced athletes and coaches on a high-performance pathway.
ESN Alumni include:
-
Megan Tandy (2014 Sochi Olympics – Biathlon)
-
Sarah Beaudry (2022 Beijing Olympics – Biathlon)
-
Maryeta O’dine (2022 Beijing Olympics – Snowboard)
-
Emily Dickson (2022 Beijing Olympics – Biathlon)
-
Joel Ewert (2024 Paris Paralympics – Wheelchair rugby)
ESN partners with the City of Prince George, Community Associations, colleges, and universities to provide high-performance training and endurance camps. In addition to directly serving athletes, ESN is the regional leader in coach education and development in Northern BC.
Not only does ESN put athletes on the map, but it also provides inclusive, quality programs that have given countless families and community members across northern BC access to low-barrier opportunities, creating and promoting active and healthy lifestyles.
ESN History:
-
The ESN Society, a PacificSport Centre, was founded in 1994 as a non-profit whose primary focus is supporting all athletes, coaches, officials, educators, parents, and sports leaders across Northern BC.
- The organization was formally known as PacificSport Northern B.C. and rebranded to ESN in 2016.
-
In 1995, ESN started advocating for a High-Performance Sport Centre.
-
In 2003, ESN wrote the proposal for what is now the Northern Sport Centre, securing $22 million from the 2010 Legacies Now fund.
-
ESN continues to act as the link between the Provincial and National high-performance sport systems in the region. It is headquartered at the Northern Sport Centre and provides Canadian Sport Institute programming, coach development, and physical literacy programming.
