Some random ramblings for the week

I’m going to go with some Random Ramblings this week, and I blame my sister.

She’s in from Alberta for a few days, and while there haven’t been any late nights (our family is not known for being hard partiers), my usual schedule has been thrown a bit out of whack, mainly because of food.

I mean, I’m not complaining about getting nicer meals than I usually make for myself, but it’s thrown my eating schedule out of whack and it may take a while to get it back on track.

It’s also not going to help that we have two statutory holidays in the next few weeks. Next Monday is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, then two weeks later it’s Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving, obviously, isn’t going to help me get my eating schedule fixed, but the biggest problem I see is sleep schedules.

I usually have my alarm set for 4 a.m. so I can get in to CFIS to do the morning news and weather. I also don’t usually sleep until 4 a.m., so the alarm is more of a backup system, just in case I actually am sleeping.

Well, me being kind of weird, I don’t take the holiday Mondays off. There isn’t as much news needed, or other jobs to do, so I’m not at the studio very long and when I get back home, I usually lie down for a while.

I may not sleep, but at least I’m resting.

Something I noticed many years ago is how today’s date aligns with Christmas. Yes, this is September 25 and Christmas is December 25, so you’re probably saying, “OK, it’s exactly three months until Christmas, we get it”.

It’s also exactly 13 months, which means for the first 30 days of September, you know exactly what day of the week that date will fall on in December.

This used to be kind of handy years ago when I was working at newspapers. We would usually start planning Christmas ad supplements and special editions in September, and it was nice to be able to tell other people what days our paper came out in December, especially since this was, believe it or not, before everyone had an appointment calendar on their phone.

While the other people were flipping through their appointment books, I would just say, “We’ve got papers coming out on this date, that date and the other date, and if we’re going to skip an issue to give people a break, this is the best choice”.

By the time I finished this spiel, most of the others had found December in this appointment books and were writing down the dates I had suggested.

It was one of the few times I was ahead of most of the other people at the paper, so it felt good.
