Lightning strikes spark fires in northwest B.C.

On July 19, the Northwest Fire Centre received significant lightning, with varying levels of precipitation. Air patrols were conducted throughout the day to look for new fire starts and confirm reports of smoke. In total, 13 new fires were detected, all within the southeast region of the fire centre.

The BC Wildfire Service’s Initial Attack Crews were busy responding to many of these new fires, with support from helicopters, who were bucketing water on them. At this point we have been able to call three of the new fires out, as well as move one into Under Control Status and one into Being Held Status. Crews will continue to respond to fires near Francois Lake and Knapp Lake today, with support from helicopters as needed.

Michel Creek wildfire (R11201), which is approximately 10 kilometres north of Tetachuck Lake, is one of four new fires south of Ootsa Lake. It is approximately 1,200 hectares and will likely be visible to surrounding communities, as far north as Francois Lake. This fire is being monitored and is not currently threatening values.

More lightning is forecast across the fire centre over the next couple of days and we will continue to conduct air patrols, however, we also rely on members of the public to find lightning-caused fires early. If you see a wildfire, report it by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone. Alternatively, you can report a new wildfire though the BC Wildfire Service app.
