The Sikh faith and Sikh identity were formalized by the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji in April 1699. The birth of the Khalsa (Sikh community) is now celebrated worldwide through Nagar Kirtans (procession of Sikhs singing kirtan or hymns through the community or town).
The annual Nagar Kirtan in Prince George will be held May 18. It will commence at 10 a.m. from Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Society and participants are encouraged to join them from the start, The procession will include an opening ceremony by the Khast’an Drummers and participants will walk towards the CN Centre. At CN Centre they will have displays of Gathka (Sikh martial arts), a diverse array of food stalls, and more. The procession will depart from CN Centre at 2:30 p.m. and arrive at Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Society at 4 p.m.
It is the request of organizers that all participants please respect Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Sikh Scriptures) who will lead the procession in the first float, by covering their head with a scarf, bandana, or turban. Please do not wear hats, and refrain from using substances if participating (ie. Including vapes, alcohol, and cigarettes).
