The Austin Road Elementary School building is coming down.
The Board of Education of School District No.57 announced Wednesday that the former school will soon be demolished.
Austin Road Elementary opened its doors in 1967 and served the City of Prince George for 43 years until 2010. The building has been partially used by community user groups since that time but aging infrastructure makes maintenance and re-purposing too costly for permanent use.
The board was recently successful in applying for funding for three new child care centres from the federal and provincial governments through the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund. One of these centres will be located on the site of the former Austin Road Elementary School. The funding for the new childcare centre included funding that allows the district to remediate and demolish the building.
The demolition project was tendered through BC Bid and has been awarded to Napp Enterprises Ltd. Napp Enterprises Ltd. is a Prince George based contractor that has been providing demolition services and hazardous materials handling in British Columbia since 1991.
Abatement work has already begun and demolition work is expected to begin in the middle of May 2024 with completion scheduled for the middle of August 2024. For the safety of the community construction fencing has been set up around the site. Please contact the School District No. 57 Administration Office with any questions or concerns about the project.
