CNC passed balanced, $97.7 million budget

The College of New Caledonia’s (CNC) board of governors has passed a balanced budget Friday.

The 2024/25 budget contains $97.7 million in expenditures, up from its $85.5 million budget last year. The majority of the increased revenue will come in the operating fund, which increased to $89 million, up from $77 million last year. The majority of that comes from the province’s skilled trades funding, which increased from $44 million to $51 million. Increased tuition will also help with revenue as it goes from $23.7 million to $28.7 million.

On the expenses side of the ledger, operations will take up the lion’s share of the budget at $88.6 million, up from 77.7 million last year.

“We developed the balanced budget guided by priorities in our lhulh whuts’odutel’eh | Learning Together strategic plan,” said Cindy Heitman, CNC’s president, in a news release. “We made choices focusing on students’ experiences and strategic enrolment, ensuring access and flexibility, as well as continuous improvement across the college.”

CNC’s 2024/25 budget will support students’ success in several ways. These include:

  • Renewing the college’s focus on truth and reconciliation, and decolonization;
  • New initiatives for student experiences including improved enrolment information systems, support for student ambassadors and student services, expanded helpdesk support hours, and additions for orientation and student events; and
  • Building upon equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts to ensure every student is welcome, acknowledged and respected.

“We have an exciting time ahead, and this budget will fuel many opportunities for students and the college community as a whole,” added Heitman. We will continue with our enrolment planning measures that will support the health of the college while putting the needs and experiences of students at the forefront.”
