Controlled burning along Highway 20 in the Chilcotin, and Williams Lake Community Forest

The BC Wildfire Service is conducting prescribed burns this weekend within the Cariboo Fire Centre in partnership with local First Nation communities and industry partners. Burning will be taking place along Highway 20 and in the Williams Lake Community Forest, west of Williams Lake.

These prescribed fire projects are implemented to achieve specific land stewardship objectives such as improving wildlife habitat, reducing fuel build-up and enhancing ecosystems.

By intentionally burning now, we reduce the risk wildfires have on nearby communities. As well, these projects provide cross training opportunities between communities, industry and the BC Wildfire Service in preparation for the wildfire season ahead.

Smoke will be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding areas and to motorists travelling on Highway 20. The BC Wildfire Service will be working on-site to prepare, control and monitor these burns.
