Sleepless in Prince George

I was very glad this week that Sunday was my non-early getup day.

Six days of the week, Monday through Saturday, I get up early in the morning, head into CFIS 93.1 and update the morning weather and do the stories for the Morning Citizen.

Sunday, I don’t, and considering the way I felt Sunday morning , that was a good thing.

I’m not sure what it was. I got to bed at a decent hour Saturday night and (I think) got to sleep fairly quickly. Then I woke up about two hours later, and couldn’t get back to sleep.

There was no noise outside to keep me awake, I just couldn’t get back to sleep.

I tried changing my position on the bed. No luck.

I tried banging my head against the wall to try to induce unconsciousness. No luck.

Of course, that attempt meant I now had to get up to get something for my headache, which didn’t help the getting back to sleep attempts.

After a couple of hours, I gave up on getting back to sleep, knowing I didn’t have to be up early, and concentrated on just relaxing.

A lot of times, when I do that, I end up falling asleep, but not this time.

When I did get up, I still had a headache, and I also had a bad feeling in my stomach.

I was worried it might be the flu, so I had some crackers and water to give my stomach a bit of nourishment.

No problem keeping that down.

A couple of hours later, I tried a couple of pieces of bread with cheese. No problem.

Now, I’m not a doctor (although I do sometimes play one in my column), but it seemed to me that indicated in some respects that this wasn’t the flu, but just a bad stomach ache.

So I got up and went about my sort of regular routine for Sunday, which is to check for possible guests for the After Nine show on Tuesday and the Post to Post sports show on Thursday. I didn’t make any phone calls, because it was still just 5:30 a.m. on a Sunday.

As the day went along, I was able to eat on a regular basis with no problems, and the ache in my stomach subsided to some extent.

The headache, however, continued most of the day. I didn’t bother consulting anyone about it, because when most people hear I have a headache, their first suggestion is amputation.

But I survived.

One quick reminder, people. Tomorrow is still February, February 29 to be precise. Doesn’t come around that often, you know.
