Some Random Ramblings for February

For the first column of February, I think I’m just going to have some Random Ramblings.

I was watching a streamer on Twitch on the weekend, whose chat can spend ‘bits’ to have their comments read out loud on stream. (Bits are something you can buy on Twitch which allow you to do different things on streams. The thing I like is they aren’t specific to one stream, so you can use them with any streamer.)

In this case, one of the streamers was spending bits to have jokes read out loud. One of them was, “I was at a long-distance race in Sweden last week. I knew I was off the course when I crossed the Finnish line”.

The streamer listened to the joke, then read it on the stream, and thought for a couple of seconds before saying, “I’m not sure whether to laugh or have you banned for a joke that bad.”

I had to agree with her (but I am going to use the joke myself).

Bought a new winter coat last week. Got it on sale and also had a gift card I had received for Christmas, so it came in at a relatively low price.

Wore it while walking to Mom’s on Saturday when it wasn’t too cold, and noticed when the wind picked up a bit, my face immediately felt a little cooler, but the coat did a good job of keeping the rest of me warm.

I also made sure I got one big enough so I can wear my sweatshirt underneath in case we get another cold snap like we had in January.

It’s strange sometimes chatting with people about the weather this winter in Prince George. A lot of people, especially those who like to walk outside, don’t mind the lack of snow on the sidewalks, but even some of them have remarked that we desperately need some snow to make sure we’re not bone-dry this summer.

One woman had the perfect solution: A little bit of snow in the city itself so things looked nice and wintry, and a lot of snow up in the hills, when it could melt (hopefully slowly) this spring and make sure the forests are kept moist.

Unfortunately, neither of us could think of a way to make that happen.

With the Super Bowl on this coming weekend (finally), I was sort of sadistically happy with the problems the NFL had near the end of the season with weather. Let’s see, they went from a 16-game schedule to 17 games, then decided to give each team a week off in the middle of the season.

So now the season stretches two weeks longer than it used to. Then they added an extra week of playoffs, and kept the two weeks off between the conference championships and the Super Bowl.

And then some people wonder why they have problems with cold and snow in some of the cities in the middle of January.
