Big third period lifts Cougars over Hurricanes

The Prince George Cougars used a dominant third period to help them defeat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-4, Friday at the CN Centre.

The Cats were led by the trio of Riley Heidt, Koehn Ziemmer, and Zac Funk who combined for 10 points in the victory. Ty Young earned his 10th win in goal, making 21 saves.

 The contest began with Elias Knoester of the Hurricanes striking first at 2:21 of the opening period. However, Prince George swiftly responded, with Koehn Ziemmer notching his 10th goal of the season at 4:23. The first period saw a goal-scoring spree, with Prince George’s own Miguel Marques putting Lethbridge ahead 2-1. The Cats rallied with two goals from Riley Heidt at 16:27 and 19:14, concluding the first period with a 3-2 lead.

The Hurricanes dominated the second period, as Joe Arnsten scored twice with assists from Marques at 8:20 and 12:43. Zac Funk, a force on the power-play, levelled the score at 4-4 for Prince George with his 19th goal of the year at 14:26.

The decisive third period belonged to the Cougars, as Zac Funk capitalized on the power-play at 13:36, courtesy of a fantastic setup from Ondrej Becher. Koehn Ziemmer sealed the victory with a highlight-reel goal at 15:45, securing a 6-4 win for Prince George. With this triumph, the Cougars now boast a league-best 17-6-0-0 record for the season.
