Zac Funk named WHL Player of the Week

The Western Hockey League has named Prince George Cougars forward Zac Funk as the league’s Tempo WHL Player of the Week for the week ending September 24.

Funk led all WHL skaters with seven points (3G-4A) this past week, recording a hat-trick and five-point effort as part of his two appearances with Prince George to begin the 2023-24 WHL Regular Season.

The product of Coldstream, B.C. began his week Friday, September 22 with five points (3G-2A), including his first career WHL hat-trick, as the Cougars blanked the Tri-City Americans 9-0 to kick off a two-game home series.

Funk’s first goal stood up as the game-winner, while he also finished the evening with six shots on goal, a +5 rating and First Star honours.

The following evening, the 20-year-old recorded two assists as Prince George dropped a 6-4 decision to Tri-City.

Funk was originally selected in the second round of the 2018 WHL Draft by the Calgary Hitmen and was acquired by the Prince George Cougars via trade in January of 2023. In 162 career WHL regular season contests with the Hitmen and Cougars, the 6-foot-0, 210-pound forward has amassed 111 points (55G-56A).

Zac Funk and the Prince George Cougars are next in action Friday, September 29 when they open a two-game road series versus the Victoria Royals (7:05 p.m. PT, Save-On Foods Memorial Centre).
