Wildfire activity is on the rise as warm, dry and windy weather continues through the area. There are evacuation orders and alerts related to two growing wildfires in the northwest reaches of the region.
Those planning on camping or hunting in the back country should exercise extreme caution and check www.bc.wildfire.ca for current status of wildfires and check www.rdffg.bc.ca for the status of the latest evacuation orders and alerts. There is a possibility that wildfire activity can change or grow suddenly, leading to changes in orders and alerts.
Anyone in an evacuation order area is required to leave the area immediately. Residents in an evacuation order area may qualify for Evacuation Support Service. For assistance, please contact the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George at 250-960-4400 or 1-800-667-1959.
Residents in an evacuation alert area should take the following actions to help prevent damage to their property and for their personal safety:
- Prepare to leave the area on short notice
- Prepare a 72-hour personal emergency kit for you and your family (including medications)
- Gather important papers and move valuables to alternate locations
- Make arrangements for pets to be moved to a safe location
- Identify a safe alternate location for livestock or hobby farm animals if an evacuation order is issued
Extreme caution is urged for anyone who may be recreating in an evacuation alert area. Conditions can change quickly as fire behaviour can be unpredictable and spread fast under these circumstances.
