Eight speeding tickets, 12 warnings handed out in school zones on first day of classes

Prince George RMCP and its partner agencies B.C. Highway Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and ICBC, as well as the RCMP volunteers, were out at two locations on the first day of school last week, reminding drivers about school speed zone safety.

“Between the two stops, one at Pineview Elementary and one at Peden Hill Elementary, we served eight violation tickets and gave out an additional 12 warnings to drivers, all of which were speed related,” Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP. “We really want to drive home the message that these are high-risk areas for students and we all need to slow down and keep a watch out for them.”

Police officers and ICBC are also reminding drivers to make sure their cell phone is put away when they are driving, as your visual attention is reduced by half when you are distracted by a hand-held device.

School zones are in effect Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., when school is in session.
