Mackenzie residents to learn about dementia

Mackenzie residents can learn more about one of B.C.’s most pressing health concerns in the coming weeks.

The non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. plans a free education session, “Getting to know dementia,” on Monday, May 29.

Dementia is an overall term for a set of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. Currently, more than 85,000 people live with dementia across B.C.

“The session is an introduction that will give people basic information about the disease and its impact on individuals, their caregivers and their support networks,” says Tara Hildebrand, an Alzheimer Society of B.C. Support & Education Coordinator, First Link for the Northern Interior, Northwest and Northeast region.

Participants will learn how dementia affects an individual’s brain and behaviour. They’ll also learn about the support available to them at any stage of the disease.

The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to noon at Mackenzie Recreation Centre, 400 Skeena Drive. To register, call the First Link® Dementia Helpline at 1-800-936-6033.

Masks are optional to attend. To learn more about safety protocols, visit alzbc.org/COVID-safety.

If you are living with dementia or have questions about it, visit www.alzheimerbc.org or call the Dementia Helpline. Service is also available in Cantonese and Mandarin at 1-833-674-5007 or Punjabi at 1-833-674-5003.
