Cougars advance to second round with OT win

The Prince George Cougars are moving on.

A 5-4 overtime victory over the Tri City Americans Sunday night has propelled the Cougars into the second round of the WHL playoffs. The Cougars took the opening round series four games to two.

The Cougars took the lead early Sunday against the Americans with first period goals from Riley Heidt and Cole Dubinsky. The Americans’ Reese Belton countered to pull the Americans within one.

Fisher O’Brien restored the Cougars lead before the end of the first frame.

The second period, however, belonged to the Americans as Ethan Ernst and Tyson Greenway each scored to even the game at three after two.

Zac Funk restored the Cougars lead early in the third, however midway through the period Jake Sloan scored for the Americans to knot the game at four and send it to overtime

Chase Wheatcroft ended the game and the series at 2:31 into overtime.

Ty Young made 34 saves in the Cougars net while Tomas Suchanek made 32 saves for the Americans.

The Cougars will now take on the Seattle Thunderbirds Friday to start the second round. The Thunderbirds swept the Kelowna Rockets in four straight games. The teams will be in Prince George for games three and four of the series on Tuesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 19.
