Hall of Famer to appear at local wrestling match

Dawn Murphy’s youth was anything but ordinary. By age 16, she left her Prince George home to travel as the rookie sensation on the All Star Wrestling circuit based in Vancouver. Her Hall of Fame career comes full circle on March 17 and 18 when she returns as a special guest at Primetime Wrestling’s double header slated for the House of Ancestors.

Best known by her ring name Princess Delta Dawn, she held the All Star Wrestling women’s championship four times, toured Japan alongside WWE Hall of Famer Alundra Blayze and has been inducted into the B.C. Indigenous Sports Hall of Fame.

Last year, Dawn was recognized as one of the Top 100 women wrestlers of all time in Canada in the book “(Un)Controlled Chaos: Canada’s Remarkable Professional Wrestling Legacy” – an encyclopedic edition of the history of the sport. No doubt, she will be taking a keen interest in seeing the ladies in action when Kat Von Heez meets “The Vixen” Jade – two of the top ladies of the present generation in the country.

Women’s wrestling has seen incredible momentum in recent years, offering more opportunities than existed when Delta Dawn was featured on the bill. Then, advertised as a special attraction, it was considered that the ladies could not be consistently scheduled on the roster for fear of losing their appeal at the ticket counter, so their careers required travel and short stays in multiple circuits across the continent. It was not a lifestyle conducive to family and career. As a special guest when the Prince George-based Primetime Wrestling swings into action, fans will have the opportunity to meet the Canadian ring legend and get a commemorative signed photo.

The double-header on March 17 and 18 is sponsored by Canadian Tire and all proceeds raised from the event support the Prince George Crisis Prevention and Intervention Centre.
