Library seeking nominations for local history awards

The Prince George Public Library (PGPL) is seeking nominations for the 2023 Jeanne Clarke Local History Awards.

There are two award categories, the Service Award and the Publication Award, with the deadline for nominations being Monday, January 9, 2023. The objective of the Jeanne Clarke Local History Award is to increase interest in local history, to publicize the library’s role in preserving and promoting local history, and to recognize individuals and groups for their efforts in local history. Although the primary goal is to recognize the history of Prince George and the surrounding area, local history is broadly defined to include all of Northern B.C. so historical work with a regional focus is eligible for recognition.

Established in 1985, the Service Award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual or group in the area of local history. In 1993, the PGPL Board added a Publication Award so authors could be recognized for producing an important new work of local history. Non-fiction, biographies, historical fiction or any publication that improves the appreciation and understanding of local history is eligible for the Publication Award. Works must be published within the past two years.

“We are especially looking for nominations for the Service Award,” said Jen Rubadeau, PGPL’s Manager of Communications and Engagement. “Past recipients who demonstrated remarkable contributions in the area of promoting and preserving local history include the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, Mary Gouchie and the Exploration Place, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, Trelle Morrow and Kym Gouchie. We really encourage people to think about individuals or organizations who do this type of work and submit a nomination letter. We are grateful for the great number of nominations we have already received for the Publication Award and look forward to receiving more.”

Nomination letters must clearly identify the nominee, the category they are being nominated in, and make a compelling case on behalf of the nominee for why their service or publication deserves to receive the Jeanne Clarke Award. Nominators must include their name and contact information, as well as the name and contact information of the nominee.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, January 9, 2023 and the nominations can be emailed to jrubadeau@pgpl.ca, dropped of or mailed to Jen Rubadeau, Manager of Communications and Engagement, Prince George Public Library, 888 Canada Games Way, Prince George, B.C., V2L 5T6.
