City stops posting legal ads in local newspaper

You can no longer find the City of Prince George’s legal advertising in the Prince George Citizen.

On November 1, the city changed the way it communicates statutory public notices. It is no longer advertising all public notices in the local newspaper, however, some will be published in the paper from time to time for major projects or applications.

It’s a financial blow for the city’s only remaining newspaper. According to the city’s statement of financial information, it spent $173,529.94 with the Citizen in 2021. The statement does not highlight how much of that was legal/public notice advertising.

The city’s statutory public notice bylaw states that newspaper notices may be provided if the matter affects the community at large or when significant public interest is anticipated.

Statutory public notices will be published on the city website, shared on its Facebook page, and posted to the first floor bulletin board at City Hall. To receive all public notices by email, subscribe to the mailing list at www.princegeorge.ca/subscribe!

What is a statutory public notice? Under Provincial legislation, the city is required to issue a statutory public notice for various activities such as public hearings, land dispositions, rezoning applications, and review of the city’s annual report. For some land related notices, there is also a requirement to notify neighbouring properties by letter and the city will continue to do that in accordance with the legislation.
