Regional district nixes ALR exclusion request from West Coast Olefins

In a 9-5 vote, Regional District of Fraser-Fort George directors have decided against asking the Agricultural Land Commission to consider a request from West Coast Olefins to exclude land from the Agricultural Land Reserve.

West Coast Olefins had proposed to build a natural gas liquids extraction plant on 12.9 hectares between McRinny Road and Lund Road in the Pineview/Buckhorn area. The request was to allow non-farm use on the property. The board had previously deferred its decision.

The regional district will inform the commission of its decision and effectively putting a halt to the project.

“West Coast Olefins’ application on this land… is clearly wrong,” said director Bill Empey, who represents the area when the plant was proposed. “It has certainly been established that Pineview is not in support.”

A 2,000-name petition as well as letters and emails opposing the request was received by the regional district.

Empey, and directors Kevin Dunphy, Owen Torgensen, Dannielle Alan, Joan Atkinson, Murry Krause, Lara Beckett, Terry Burgess and chair Art Kaehn opposed the motion to forward the project to the ALC. Directors Warren Wilson, Allan Frederick, Lyn Hall, Kyle Sampson, and Terri McConnachie voted in favour.
