College of New Caledonia President Dr. Dennis Johnson has been appointed Board Chair of BC Colleges for a two-year term effective November 23, 2021.
BC Colleges represents 10 of the province’s public post-secondary colleges. Presidents from each institution meet regularly to discuss common opportunities and shared priorities.
Johnson takes over the position from Camosun College President Sherri Bell.
“As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and build new opportunities in a changed world, the province’s colleges are focused on ensuring students can access the training and applied education they need for better lives and stronger communities,” says Johnson. “Thank you to Sherri Bell for her leadership. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure colleges offer students every opportunity to reach their unique goals.”
“The role of BC Colleges is to work closely with major employers, stakeholders and government regarding partnerships, investments and public policy, and to facilitate collaboration between the colleges so they can deliver education and skills training to learners across BC, making them exceptionally prepared for their future,” says BC Colleges President Colin Ewart.
The board chair works collaboratively with all the BC college presidents, The Research Universities’ Council of BC, and the BC Association of Institutes and Universities on enhancing the work of the colleges with employers and key stakeholders to educate and prepare learners for success and a quick transition into the work force.
BC Colleges’ current priorities include a focus on community economic recovery, specifically the talent employers need to fill labour market gaps; student supports, especially for Indigenous learners; new approaches to learning delivery; and college financial sustainability.
