Tough weekend for both the U15 and U17 Cats

The U15 Cariboo Cougars were in good position to snap a four-game losing streak but the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs didn’t let that happen.

On Sunday at Kin 1, the Chiefs edged the Cougars 5-3 in a BC Elite Hockey League contest. The teams were tied 3-3 heading to the third period but, in those final 20 minutes, Charles Robinson scored a shorthanded goal to put the Chiefs ahead 4-3 and the visitors later got an empty-netter from Lucas McDonald.

Preston Pierre, Hunter Henry and Shea Baker had the Cariboo goals. For the Chiefs, McDonald finished with a hat trick, and Callum Whiteway also scored.

Maverick Bell was the winning goaltender and Kaleb Miller took the loss.

On Saturday, the Chiefs beat the Cats 4-1. Magnus Veldman scored for the Cougars in that one. The Chiefs, meanwhile, got their goals from Brayden Yee, Robinson, Nathan Ramos and Nicholas Ferraro-Howling.

In the nets, Bell earned the victory and Ryder Green was on the losing end.

The sixth-place Chiefs bumped their record to 6-5-1-0 and the ninth-place Cougars slipped to 3-9-0-2.

The Cougars don’t play again until Nov. 27-28 when they host the North Island Silvertips.

The U17 Cariboo Cougars had no answer for the Greater Vancouver Canadians.

In BC Elite Hockey League games played Saturday and Sunday at Kin 1, the first-place Canadians blanked the Cats 6-0 and 3-0.

The Canadians moved to 11-1-0-0, while the seventh-place Cougars saw their record fall to 4-7-0-1.

The Cats will be in Burnaby this coming weekend for games against the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs, who are tied for top spot with the Canadians.
