Attendance at regional heritage and cultural sites down 75 per cent in 2020, thanks to pandemic

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George supports eight heritage and cultural facilities within the region with annual operating grants as part of the Regional Cultural Plan.

Each year, the board receives a report outlining the attendance, operations and finances of each site. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were significant and overall attendance at the funded cultural sites decreased by 75 per cent in 2020. Total visitation was just over 46,000 people with 44 staff and 22 summer students employed, 161 volunteers donating their time and over 3,500 school children visits.

There was considerable increase in outreach contacts as the cultural sites pivoted their programming to online activities. Also, with COVID-related travel restrictions, local and regional residents were the majority of visitors to the attractions.
