Man charged in connection with EconoLodge fire that killed three

RCMP have charged a local man in connection with last year’s EconoLodge Motel fire that killed three people.

On September 16, the Prince George RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit arrested 35-year-old Prince George resident Justin Kyle Aster. The B.C. Prosecution Service approved the following charges against Aster:

  • Three counts of criminal negligence causing death
  • Arson in relation to inhabited property
  • Arson damaging property

Aster will remain in custody until his next court appearance. Aster is known to police.

The Prince George RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit began their investigation on the morning of July 8, 2020. The B.C. Coroner Service also conducted a parallel, fact-finding investigation into the deaths.

“Investigators in our Serious Crime Unit have put many long hours into this file and are proud to be able to bring a suspect forward to the courts in relation to these three tragic deaths,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.
