People travelling on Highway 97 south of Prince George near the BCR Site over the weekend may see a lot of activity, including large, bright flames, as fire rescue crews from the City of Prince George and Regional District of Fraser Fort George undertake liquid propane gas training.
Crews will be undergoing both theoretical and “live fire burning” training during the day on Saturday and Sunday along with teams from CN Rail and Emergency Response Assistance Canada (ERAC), a not-for-profit emergency preparedness and response organization. These exercises are critical for crews in the Prince George area as the city is a major intersection for container traffic coming by rail from the north, south, east, and west.
At times, members of the public near the BCR site may see a large bright flame as various stages of the training takes place. There is minimal risk to the public. Two fire trucks will be on-site along with the crews in training.
This training is part of a program offered by ERAC, which provides live situation exercises to Fire Rescue Services across the country, most recently with the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine and City of Terrace. The simulation and exercises are moving from city to city by railcar and involve the use of a large propane burner to produce a large, intense flame to reproduce a propane fire incident for training purposes.
