This week city crews are removing old, cracked, and upheaved sidewalks along 20th Avenue from Queensway to Maple Street. The 365-metre stretch is the city’s largest sidewalk construction project of the year.
This project is one of five sidewalk operations scheduled for 2021. In total, about 1.3 kilometres of sidewalk is set for repaving. As part of these sidewalk operations, 20 accessible ramps will be added to improve accessibility.
This operation is one of four sidewalk projects funded, in part, by the Community Works Fund, which is administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) to allocate federal Gas Tax Funding based on population to each local government in British Columbia. Three other projects have received funding:
- The east side of Kelly Road between Vellencher Rd and Austin Rd (completed)
- Simon Fraser Ave North East side between Cowart Rd and Eton Ave
- Ospika Blvd East Side between Ferry Ave and Pinewood St
Later this year, the sidewalk on the east side of Ospika Boulevard between Ferry Avenue and Pinewood Street will also be rehabilitated.
Road rehabilitation in the Connaught Neighbourhood
One block north of the sidewalk operation on 20th Avenue, crews have milled multiple roads connecting to Connaught Drive and 20th Avenue to prepare for paving. Milled streets included Connaught Drive, Juniper, Kenwood, Larch, Norwood, Oak, Pine, and 16th Avenue. Paving on these roads is expected to be completed by next week. Please follow posted signage and travel cautiously around crews.
